Commercial Auto Common Endorsements
Personal Car Insurance
Whenever you get behind the wheel of a car, it is possible that you may cause damage to other people's property, injure or even kill yourself, other drivers, passengers or pedestrians.
Mandatory Insurance Coverage :
Most people don’t have the money to pay for the losses (property damage, injury, death) they might cause while driving, so governments require drivers to carry a certain amount of insurance to cover any losses they might cause others to suffer (Liability).
Some governments, including those of every province and territory in Canada, also require drivers to carry coverage for their own medical expenses and loss of income resulting from driving-related incidents.(AB – Accident Benefits & BI -Bodily Injury).
Optional Insurance Coverage :
You can also voluntarily purchase additional insurance for your car, including :
Types of Coverage :
LIABILITY
Liability coverage protects a driver if someone else is killed or injured – or if his or her property is damaged – because of the driver's negligence. It will pay for legitimate claims against a driver up to the limit of coverage, and will pay for the costs of settling the claims, including defense costs. The minimum limit to carry in Alberta is $200,000, but most insured's carry $1,000,000 or $2,000,000 Liability.
COLLISION
Collision coverage pays for damage to a vehicle to the extent that the vehicle's driver is at fault, or for damage caused by an unidentified vehicle or object.
COMPREHENSIVE
Comprehensive coverage pays for all insured damage to a vehicle (e.g., fire, theft, vandalism) except for collision damage.
ACCIDENT BENEFITS
Accident Benefits coverage is compulsory in all provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador. This coverage provides compensation, regardless of fault, if a vehicle's driver, its passengers or pedestrians suffer injury or death in an automobile collision.
SEF – 44 Family Protection Endorsement
The Family Protection Endorsement is an endorsement designed to provide insurance protection to named insured's and their families. It is intended to provide coverage for injuries or death arising from motor vehicle accidents, in circumstances where the wrongdoer is either not insured or is not adequately insured.
It is optional coverage for which a premium is paid in addition to the premium for coverage purchased under the standard automobile coverage. The essence of the endorsement is that the insured protects himself from the risk of being injured by an inadequately insured motorist.
